While working on a project in 2018 with a group of BAME boys in Birmingham, I was reminded of an encounter I had at a college in Barking and Dagenham nearly 30 years before.
During that experience two systems collided. One was my Caribbean upbringing and the other was that of my tutor at the college.
The rest (as they say) is history and took me on the path of learning which gave birth to the book, Carib-British male, the Community, Culture and Continuing Cycle of Underachievement.
Let me take you on a journey from Hackey, one of the boroughs within inner city London, throughout living in Nottingham, Birmingham and spending extended time in the Caribbean.
Alongside this, let me share with you what I have learned from working in the church, residential social work (Children's homes), youth and community work, family support (with CAMHS) and Emotional Wellbeing/School counselling work in school.
My experiences are mirrored in the lives of Carib-British boys year in and year out. In this book, I share what see as a way forward.
