1. Behaviour - what does it mean and what lies beneath?

Ofsted G_O HistWord Cloud

This word cloud is based on Ofsted reports, which we downloaded and processed from 180 schools across primary and secondary in the West Midlands. It shows how the frequency of children feeling safe and happy in school as characteristic of the good and outstanding schools. However, what we also see is the prevalence, (perhaps over reliance) of the term 'behaviour'. Where this word is used, what can we infer from it and how does it differ between schools?

Round and round we go...

We need to move not just beyond but beneath the surface of external presentations from children to facilitating the exploration of the deeper underlying motives.

Our objective must be to help and not punish them.

We think there is now an urgent case for additional needs to be better addressed and managed in schools.  We consider additional needs to be anything in addition to the core learning needs that students will have in their education settings. In our case, as in many others, what we set out to explore when we began planning for this report led us to some unexpected discoveries and conclusions. We were familiar with many of the longstanding issues regarding the presenting needs of children and young people, which impact on their learning and development. These range from mental health challenges that are increasing apparent amongst the younger population, and which have been exacerbated by the pandemic, alongside the increasing SEN needs that schools are having to address.
